Hirsutism is a nasty hand that mother nature deals women (as if we don’t suffer enough as it is). The majority of women that we treat for the condition are mostly concerned with the excessive hair growth on their face, usually chin, upper lip and cheeks area. It can be very discouraging and affect self esteem greatly.

While I won’t use this blog to go through the medical explanation of hirsutism I will tell you about some of our experiences in treating women with this condition. However, if you want to learn more about potential causes and different treatments for it I have concluded this blog with a Health & Medical article that sums it up well.

What is most important to understand with excessive facial hair growth in women is that we can NOT guarantee any result as it is very unpredictable. Generally it is caused by excessive production of “male” type hormones (darn those men!) like androgen. Unless you can get that under control, laser for permanent hair removal really won’t work.

That being said, what we do regularly accomplish in treatment is helping to keep the hair growth under control for the lady. The hair doesn’t grow back so quickly staying away for up to 6 weeks. If the lady is successful in having the amount of hair reduced there is no guarantee that it is permanent and can and does quite often come back if the lady doesn’t have regular treatments done. It can take up to 6 treatments before you see any actual reduction occur and once you reach a satisfactory reduction you will have to maintain it with period treatments that can be as often as every 3-6 months.

Before we treat anyone with hirsutism we do require a doctors consent as we believe its important to have a proper diagnosis and treatment for the condition which is something we can not do.

If you decide to commence with laser hair removal treatment for hirsutism, it’s really important that you refrain from waxing, tweezing or plucking the hair prior to treatment. And if you are on a retin-A treatment for acne (a common symptom of PCOS) this makes your skin very sensitive to the laser energy and you would need to stop using it a good week in advance.

At the end of the day, we want very much to help control the hair growth and hopefully alleviate the suffering for you. If you have specific questions about treatment send us an email and we will be happy to help you out.
